The Cat's Meow - 11/29/04: Harmony
To assert that a group of people are living in harmony with nature is simply a different way of saying that they live like animals.
This is another thing that has bothered me for a long time. The subsistence cultures of the distant past didn't develop some master plan for living in harmony with nature: they survived because they were better at killing things than the things that wanted to kill them!
It's all very well to talk about harmony with nature if you believe God created a perfect world in six days, but in a mutating biosphere organized by accidental combinations of sex and death today's harmony may be tomorrow's ecological catastrophe.
I know that pollution and diminishing biodiversity are scary, but you can't have your cake and eat it too. Either you live in abject poverty, or you accept the fact that some species are going to survive and some aren't.
Personally, I'm going with the option that allows me to eat mozzarelle cheese all year long.
Respectfully submitted,
Ferdinand T. Cat
