The Cat's Meow - 01/03/05: Intelligence

by Ferdinand T Cat
The defining assumption of liberalism is that liberals are much smarter than the average person. Many people become liberals because they are actually much smarter than the average person. The problem is that nobody is smart enough.

Conservatives typically see liberals as arrogant, and liberals typically see conservatives as stupid.

Dr. Thomas Sowell explains the reasons for this in his book A Conflict of Visions. Liberals look at homelessness and it seems obvious that building more homes will solve the problem. If anything goes wrong, application of intellect can fine-tune it. Conservatives are sure something will go wrong, but they don't know what it is until it happens.

So, people don't become liberals because they're stupid, they become liberals because they think they're smart. What many conservatives don't understand is that some of them actually are smart.

It's just that nobody is smart enough to think up all the things that will go wrong when you start building low-income housing.

Respectfully submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat

Oh, I get it. Liberals are stupid people who think they are smart. Heh, those are even more annoying than people who are merely stupid.

Oh yeah: speaking as a conservative whose I.Q. is 20 points above the average person's and is still in high school, and has been on the honor roll for every year of that high school career (which isn't saying much considering the quality of our public schools, but is saying much when considering the quality of most public school students), and lives in a liberal city of a liberal county of a liberal state, very close to the border of Washington D.C., one of the most liberal areas in the nation, I do not agree with your hypothesis that liberals are smarter than the average person (I guess that would make you even smarter than they are).

As a matter of fact, while there are a few dumb conservatives, in terms of intellect, most of the conservatives I know of make the average liberal look like a zoo animal.

Well, generalizations are always tricky. Bruce and I have encountered many smart people who are liberals, and there is no question that liberals infest the upper reaches of academia in large numbers. I don't want to make the mistake of underestimating them.

Nonetheless, I believe that even the smartest liberal would find it less painful to face a charging rhinoceros than attempt to argue a point with Antonin Scalia or Tom Sowell.

I was actually thinking of you and Ann Coulter. :)

To be honest, I don't personally know any conservatives outside of my church (or if I do, they haven't admitted it to me. Conservatives tend to be less likely to blab about their political beliefs than liberals. Myself included). And they (the people in my church) are at least as smart as anyone I know outside my church. A few are probably even smarter.

I guess one of the reasons I doubt liberals' intellect is the fact that they seem to think that holding a ton of inane protests, calling people bigots, homophobes, etc., and lying and cheating to further their agenda will somehow make the world a better place. At least if they were honest enough to admit that they hate us and want to make our lives miserable, or that they only want to make the world a better place for themselves, then I'd concede that they are at least smart enough to figure out how.

Another reason I doubt their intellect is that they are just too emotional. It seems really hard for them to explain something calmly and reasonably (unless they are lying or dismissing those they disagree with). I guess that's also one of the reasons why I'm a cat person: a cat is normally calm and collected whereas a dog will bark at anything that moves. But I digress. :)

While I agree that there are liberals who have learned a lot of facts, I tend to measure a person's intellect by how they apply those facts. Applied knowledge versus acquired knowledged. A lot of liberals are quick to misinterpret or even ignore facts that don't agree with their viewpoint. And while I may doubt a liberal's intellect, I never underestimate their sneakiness/cleverness.

Anyway, thanks for your insight. It's nice having a superior life form to talk with. :)
