Notes from Ferdy - Creation Myths

by Ferdinand T Cat

The whole church and state thing has been in the news recently. Bruce and I were discussing the whole Intelligent Design concept as a result of reading an article in Homo Insapiens.

Bruce does software for molecular biology research, and as far as he's concerned, the design of DNA machinery is more "Completely Wacky" than "Intelligent".

But I digress.

My favorite explanation for the creation myth comes from James P. Hogan's story Making Light, which can be found in the anthology The Ascent of Wonder.

The basic idea of the story is that God comes up with a plan to build a fully-functional world in 6 days. He explains the plan to the angels, and all heck breaks loose. They decide that one thing is unfair, and another thing is not safe, and this thing requires more testing, and so forth and so on, in the typical fashion of bureaucrats who measure themselves by the amount of progress they can prevent.

Anyway, eventually, the project becomes so complicated that God throws in the towel and decides to instead build a single point of compressed matter and energy. One of his assistants comes up to him and says (I'm paraphrasing here) "Whatever happened to the beautiful blue world with all the people on it?" and God replied "I invented something called physics. It will lead to the same result, it's just that it will take a lot longer."

Respectfully submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat
