The Cat's Meow - 03/25/05: Foresight

by Ferdinand T Cat
It is very easy to predict something after it happens.

Today's quote was inspired by this story of the Red Lake School shooting.

Articles like this are pointless: for every disturbed child who goes on a rampage, there are several thousand who never get past aggravated sulking. The problem is, every living creature has a need to feel safe. For cats, this consists of finding a dark place that offers partial concealment. For humans, this consists of convincing yourself that you can predict the future. Hence, the Clues Are Always There.

Without the benefit of knowing how the story ends, a different picture of Jeff Weise emerges from the facts in the article: a disturbed teenager shunted from place to place as the adults in his life try to find a way to redeem him. At what point should they have decided he was a hopeless cause?

Even a cat can't answer that one.

Respectfully submitted

If liberals spent as much time on stopping bullying and cliques in school as they do on gun control, maybe there would be fewer sulking teens plotting revenge. Liberals endorsing tolerance? Won't happen!

A lot of schools use the "Character Counts" curriculum in an attempt to install moral values in the young, and there was a spate of anti-bullying programs after Columbine.

If you go to http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0777958.html, you can see that these incidents are becoming rarer. There were 19 in Clinton's second term and 10 in Bush's first term. I suspect that the September 11 attack had a sobering effect, but who can say it hasn't been Character Counts?
