Web Site News - About Trackbacks

by Ferdinand T Cat

Bruce gets a lot of questions about trackbacks, so I thought I'd explain them here, with pictures.

Trackbacks are a way of notifying a blog article that you've linked to it. The blog software sends a special message called a ping to inform the target blog of the link.

Here's how it works. This article contains a link to my original Continue the Conversation article. I want people who read the original article to know about this one as well, so I look up that article's trackback ID (http://www.conservativecat.com/mt/mt-tb.cgi/240). This is a Movable Type blog, so I can put the trackback ID on the Create New Entry form and the blog software automatically sends the ping. If you don't have Movable Type, you can use the free Haloscan service. You can read more about how Haloscan handles trackbacks here.

Some blogs support trackbacks directly on the index page. Sending a trackback ping to these blogs gives you instant exposure. In addition to Conservative Cat, there's

Trackbacks have to be relevant. That is, the article sending the trackback should relate to the material in the original article or should contain a link to it. As with comments, there are spammers out there who enjoy clogging your blog with ads for online gambling and gray market drugs. You don't want to be classed with them.

Trackbacking a Carnival is a useful way to generate interest during the early stages. The highly successful Friday Ark initially announced itself to the world via trackbacks appearing in pet blogs all over the Internet. This is why the Carnival Submission Form supports trackbacks.

I hope this helps to answer your questions.

Respectfully submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat

HTML is not allowed in comments; however, if you put in a raw URL (http://www.somewhere.com/page.html) it will automatically be converted to a link.. Also, it is likely your comment will not appear unless you refresh the page manually after posting it.
