Undo the Damage! - Fixing Social Security

by Tallulah Interloper

I know I haven't blogged for a long time, but I've had my paws full trying to convince Ferdy that there's really no good reason he ever needs to come out of his hiding place in the upstairs bedroom.

Anyway, today I want to talk about Social Security. As you know, President Bush is trying to reform Social Security so that it stays solvent in the long term. Like all liberals, I believe Social Security is very important to our society, but I think Bush's plan is the wrong way to go about it.

Like most problems in our modern world, the secret to fixing Social Security is not less government control, it's more government control. There is only one permanent fix to the problem of Social Security, and that's socialized medicine!

Right now, all our decisions about medical care are made by a hodgepodge of lawyers, doctors, insurance companies, and ordinary adults. With socialized medicine in place, all the decisions can be made by the government! If it looks like we have too many senior citizens collecting Social Security and not enough young people paying taxes, we can just cut off medical care for old people! Since the government will control all access to health care, nobody will be able to do anything about it. With socialized medicine, we'll never have to worry about things like that Terry Schiavo mess: the government will pull the plug in order to save money for Social Security.

The best chance this country had for a truly liberal solution to the Social Security mess was the Clinton Health Care Plan. Remember that provision where you had to go to jail if you tried to choose a different doctor? That's exactly what is needed to prevent undesirable people from getting medical help instead of dying in order to save money and help balance the Federal Budget. We have to get ClintonCare back on the table!!!

It may be too late to win the last election, but it's never too late to undo the damage!!
