Ferdy Word of the Day - 04/11/05: Spewage
spewage: a spray of abusive words and phrases offered without evidence, and so general as to make refutation impossible.
Here's an example of what I mean, from this article at the Progressive Blog Alliance.
How could a president and his party not only survive the errors of the last four years but actually strengthen their grip on America? The Bush administration has in the last four years created enough problems to bring any two administrations down. Yet millions of Americans support this president and conservative power structure he represents! Can they not see the forest for the trees? Are they blind to the lies, the half-truths, and the deceptions? Do they not understand that instead of being in a “war,” we are really in an “occupation” of a foreign country? Do they not remember that this President and his party sold themselves as being fiscally responsible? Are the American people blind to the truth?
About the only verifiable fact here is the comment about fiscal responsibility (and I have to admit, that one bothers me, too). The rest, however, is impossible to refute because it's essentially meaningless. Before you can even begin to pick apart the author's thesis, you have to pin him down on every single point, and even if you do, what have you proven? Merely that this one instance of the great tapestry of evil isn't as bad as it looked on first blush.
So the next time you run into a stream of invective, don't get mad! Just tell yourself it's another spewage spill, and all you have to do is step around it.
Respectfully submitted,
Ferdinand T. Cat
