Confused Americans for Truth - A Numbers Game
The Progressive Blog Alliance has recovered from its weekend database problems and is starting the month of April with an essay on economics called Conspiracy Theory #1.
In case you didn't know, there is a vast conspiracy afoot to keep you from working at home. The reason: if office buildings were to suddenly find themselves empty, there would be a real-estate crash.
It's not hard to find evidence that in fact the number of people working at home is on the increase. If you go to this page, you will see the latest statistics.
It's possible that the author of Conspiracy Theory #1 is only talking about large employers. In fact, a a recent study shows that most of the growth in teleworking is taking place for enterprises with fewer than 1000 employees. The problem is, according to census reports, less than 50% of the work force is employed by companies with 500 or more employees, so the majority of the work force is not affected by a conspiracy among large-company CEOs.
What does this all mean? It means that Conspiracy Theory #1 is completely bogus. The article contains a single verified fact, which is that it's possible for some people to be better off at the expense of others; however, that fact has no relation to the author's main point, which that CEOs are trying to prevent people from working at home in order to prevent an economic collapse. Furthermore, it is a gross over-simplification: there is no indication of how many people in the lower income strata would find themselves out of work in the event of a real-estate crash. One would expect construction workers, for example, to suffer mightily in that scenario.
So, the next time you read an article by a progressive, remember Conspiracy Theory #1, and adjust your skepticism accordingly. See, this is not an isolated incident.
