Notes from Ferdy - John Paul II Passes From a World He Helped Improve
Back in the Fourteenth Century, during a period in which there were no less than three simultaneous popes, one of the pretenders took the name John XXIII. The name was considered an ill omen, and there were no Pope Johns until Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli ascended to the See in 1958. It was an inside joke of sorts: he was dying from stomach cancer and no one expected very much from him. As Pope John XXIII, Roncalli established the Second Vatican Council, forever bringing the Catholic Mass closer to the parishoners. His name would be carried forward by two succeeding popes-- John Paul I and John Paul II.
John Paul II will be remembered for his steadfastly non-violent opposition to communism and his determination to make the Catholic Church a force for good in an increasingly secular world.
I would like to remember him for this speech at the very beginning of his reign. I'm sure many people would consider it highly inflammatory and indiscreet, but I think we need more just like it.
Respectfully submitted,
Ferdinand T. Cat
