The Cat's Meow - 05/02/05: Bread
Every time you buy a loaf of bread, you make the world a better place.
There is a terrible mis-conception at the heart of modern progressive thought, and its genetic marker is the phrase "zero sum". Perhaps the most famous example is a book by Lester Thurow called The Zero-Sum Society, but the basic principle is also at the root of modern anti-Americanism: the belief that because we have more, the rest of the world has to make do with less.
But you put the lie to this whole concept every time you go the store and buy a loaf of bread. See, the reason you buy a loaf of bread is that you would rather have the bread than the cash you use to pay for it. The reason the grocery store sells it to you is that they would rather have the cash. Both parties benefit from the transaction, which means there is a positive sum, not a zero sum.
So, when you buy a loaf of bread, you're making the world a better place.
Respectfully submitted,
Ferdinand T. Cat
