The Cat's Meow - 05/13/05: The Blawg Review Incident

by Ferdinand T Cat
If you're going to be a snob, it's critically important to check your facts before you put something in writing.
Dear Webmaster at Conservative Cat,

Thank you for your interest in Blawg Review.

However, we do not want to have our submissions made through your website submission form for carnivals.

Unlike many other "carnivals" the Blawg Review submssions are always made to the same address, so there isn't the confusion about where to submit each week, and we have a dedicated weblog at www.blawgreview.com that explains the concept to new participants and provides specific submission guidelines.

We'd appreciate it if you would remove Blawg Review from your listing.

It's not that we don't think what you do is useful for others, it's just not right for Blawg Review or our participants.

Thank you.

Of the 33 carnivals we support, 11 have their own blog and 31 have a single EMAIL address for submission, so I don't think that's the problem.

This doesn't bother me, of course, but Bruce thinks it's a veiled threat when a lawyer says Hello, and after reading this particular missive it took the better part of half an hour to coax him out from his hiding place under the couch.

Respectfully submitted

Ferdinand T. Cat

The writer of that email might not be a lawyer, and certainly isn't a snob. On the internet, nobody knows you're a dog.

The concern we have with third party submission forms is that they train the carnival participants to go to the submission form each week rather than the carnival's own dedicated page or website. That drives the traffic to the form website instead. I know because I use your handy little form often when participating in other carnivals. See how I lost track of the fact that so many of these others have dedicated addresses and websites. For Blawg Review, we don't favor that approach, though others might have no problem with it, and we don't speak for anyone but ourselves.

It also concerns us that promoting such a system puts our submissions in the control of the form generator webmaster rather than the "carnival" organizers. For us, we are not confident to rely on strangers to be responsible that the forwarding of submissions works effectively. We would have no control over where our submissions might be sent, or saved, if our participants were encouraged to use your scheme.

On what basis should we trust a cat handle our business, anyway? If you're even a cat.

You're lucky he didn't include a bill.

I, personally, do not see how having both the "centralized" carnival submission system (as in the one on the Blawgreview site or whatever) as well as the one proposed by this site (which, come to think of it, is more centralized than the other version... blah) could be a bad thing... Sure, some people will go here instead of going to the Blawgreview site. So what? If they are just posting a carnival entry, what are the odds of them continuing on to read the rest of the site (I honestly do not know, hence the question)? Traffic that comes in, posts a link, and then leaves hardly counts as traffic. Additionally, having a submission system on this site would attract the traffic that already visits this site (but not the Blawgreview one), potentially adding more traffic, instead of subtracting it.

At any rate, yeah, it was a snobbish email. Here, a fuzzy feline was trying to help another site out, and this person turns him down cold, with what amounts to be a, "we're better than you," message. Blah. Ain't nothin' superior to a cat.

Watch it with the snide cracks, buddy. We canines are a damn sight smarter than human lawyers. And we're such snobs about it, we won't even bother ourselves to whiz on your wingtips.

In all things, follow the money.
