Confused Americans for Truth - Arianna Huffington and The Dean Position

by Ferdinand T Cat

Every now and then I think there really is a God who is watching out for us. Late last week, the Progressive Blog Alliance financially flamed out, depriving me of a major source of inspiration. But as that door closed, another one opened-- The Huffington Post.

Of course, I have yet to explain why God designed cats to hate water and enjoy fish.

Anyway, I was reading a post by Arianna herself, and I decided it was worth my while to try and figure out why the thing felt so creepy.

You can see the post here. The creepy part is given below.

There I was, as is my Sunday morning tradition, watching Meet the Press while doing yoga. (Or is it doing yoga while watching Meet the Press? Whatever.) Tim Russert was interviewing Howard Dean. At least, I’m pretty sure it was Russert. For one thing, I was in the Uttanasana II position, so I couldn’t see very well. For another, what I was hearing sounded remarkably like some White House flack:

Humor is a tricky thing. If someone is obviously trying to be light-hearted and failing, it's uncomfortable to watch. It reminds me an awful lot of the first days of Air America. (I kept having visions of a smoke-filled room of interns listening to Rush Limbaugh and taking notes: He's talking about himself! Make sure we talk about ourselves, too!)

In order to work, humorous asides have to make you look at something in a new way. While it may be unusual to do yoga while watching Meet the Press, it doesn't change anything about the way we look at Tim Russert, and certainly doesn't contribute to the main point of the article. So, it's not funny, and instead of making us feel closer to Arianna, it makes us wish she'd get to the point.

I'm reluctant to assume I know what point Arianna was trying to make (caution is a survival trait when you weigh less than 20 pounds), but I think it was that Tim Russert was being too tough on Howard Dean. Arianna seemed most upset that Tim chose not to delve deeper into the following comment by Dean.

Because of the president’s actions, I would argue that we are in greater danger now because of what’s going on in Iraq than we were before. Now there are terrorists in Iraq. They have migrated there since our troops were there.

Laurence Simon skewers Dean's point here, but it doesn't take a lot of thought to realize that maybe having terrorists in Iraq is better than having them here where we don't have armed Marines patrolling the streets.

And of course, that's the worst part. After failing to be funny, she fails to make a worthwhile point. It does not bode well for her future in this business.

But I'm not worried. If the Huffington Post goes down in flames, God will provide us with another window on the liberal mainstream. That's what happened the last time.

Respectfully submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat
