Confused Americans for Truth - Arianna Huffington and The Voice of Doom

by Ferdinand T Cat

Every now and then, I get the feeling that journalism operates in a sort of cartoon character universe. A commentator plants both feet firmly in mid-air, but as long as he doesn't look down, he won't fall.

A good example is this column by Nikki Finke, which discusses the opening of Arianna Huffington's blog, The Huffington Post. The paragraph below is typical of the tone.

It almost seems like some sick hoax. Perhaps Huffington is no longer a card-carrying progressive but now a conservative mole. Because she served up liberal celebs like red meat on a silver platter for the salivating and Hollywood-hating right wing to chew up and spit out.

Conspicuously missing from Ms. Finke's article is any mention of the traffic coming in to The Huffington Post or the business model, other than the fact that Arianna expects a lot of traffic and considers the blog a good investment.

The reason for the omission is that The Huffington Post is less than 24 hours old, and there's no sign of advertising anywhere, even something as useless as a blocked popup. We have no facts on which to base an analysis of the blog's potential for success.

So, we have a review of a new blog conducted with no data except some hearsay about how it might have been better if David Geffen had signed on as a writer. (That makes no sense to me. After all, David Geffen is a producer, not a cat.)

I think the problem is that humans are too anxious to know the future. You cover yourselves with public opinion polls and market research and mindless superstitions because it's so much better to KNOW how it's going to turn out instead of guessing. Why watch Veronica Mars if it's going to be cancelled before you find out who killed Lilly Kane? Why read through Arianna Huffington's blog if it's going to flame out in the first week? Why bother to build a hardened-concrete survival shelter under your basement if you know John Kerry is going to lose?

See, I'm the same way. I want to know what's going to happen. I just don't like to talk about it until all the votes are in. It's harder to pass yourself off as a superior life form when you keep counting your chickens before the eggs are laid.

Respectfully submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat

We watched Huffington on our local FOX news in the morning and she seemed to actually "get" blogs. When Dave Navarro (who I can't stand) asked her about the controversy about if bloggers are journalists or not, she just waved it off saying "the great thing about blog is if they are wrong they get corrected immediately by everyone else"

A funny quote of hers, which did not make much sense given her site, was when he asked her "many people feel celebrities shouldn't be listened to because they don't know any more than the average person" and she said "they don't know more"

what?

Now if the question were "do DOGS know more" then obviously the answer is yes! People should listen more to us.

The reason I can't stand David Navarro is he keep sasking the same question over and over when he doesn't get the response he wants. It's like watching him ask "but don't you think I'm right? .... but... don't you think I'm right? ... but don't you think I'm right?"

It's like when daddy tries to get me to do something like "sit". He keeps repeating it as if I'm going to do it. I'll sit when it's time to sit.

Oh, BTW, I have to use my dad's account because stoopid TypeKey won't give accounts to dogs.
