Web Site News - Refections on Spam #3

by Ferdinand T Cat

Okay, folks, the trackback spam just went from stupid to mind-bogglingly evil.

Trackback spam consists of a site title, an article title, and an excerpt. The excerpt generally contains a bunch of links. For porn spammers, the link names are liberally sprinkled with adjectives like "hot" and "wild", plus nouns that have no place on a family-friendly blog.

Today, one of them replaced the standard text with (I wish I were making this up) "Disney channel games".

Disgustedly submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat

I've heard that there are now aggressive anti-spam programs, that actually attack the spammers.

Too bad that the programs aren't yet able to give skinspammers new and creative elbows.

Please tell me you have the MT-Blacklist plugin, or upgraded to the new and improved MT? Both of those aid a great deal in the anti-spam warfare... I think Blacklist is the single most useful thing I ever downloaded for my blog. Definitely might want to look into it :).

Amen! Mucho irritating. What's also a pain is clueless n00bs that trackback without a link...

Bruce wrote a little plug-in to prevent comment spam, and it's been very effective; however, he's afraid to reveal the algorithm because he thinks the spammers will figure out a way to counter it the way they've done with so many other algorithms.

Bruce removes the trackback spam manually, and the time he spends really hasn't bothered me yet. I suspect, however, that between here and my ultimate conquest of the world I will need to bring in MT-Blacklist.

HTML is not allowed in comments; however, if you put in a raw URL (http://www.somewhere.com/page.html) it will automatically be converted to a link.. Also, it is likely your comment will not appear unless you refresh the page manually after posting it.
