Web Site News - Mutating EMAIL VIruses
The email-info viruses have become the latest fashion in electronic vandalism. My personal opinion is that the people responsible for this thing should be sentenced to two consecutive life sentences-- one for spreading a virus and the other for generation mountains of spam.
Several new variants of this virus type were discovered today. If you have not yet updated your virus definitions, do so immediately!
What makes these viruses especially difficult is that they take steps to cripple your anti-virus software, stopping the auto-protect processes and then deleting anything that looks like it might be anti-virus software.
The most common virus of this type is W32.Sober.O@mm. The identifying characteristic of this one is that it issues an the message Error: CRC not complete. when it deploys. The removal tool can be found here.
As with all viruses, new variants are discovered daily. Here are lin1ks to the Symantec Anti-Virus pages for the latest ones.
Even if you're not using Norton Anti-Virus, if you can identify what's been deployed, Symantec has a removal tool for it. If you can't identify the virus, McAfee has a page of more general-purpose removal tools here.
In the meantime, we've added the Symantec Security Alert feed to our sidebar. It looks positively awful in Firefox, but the information's importance trumps any aesthetic considerations.
Respectfully submitted,
