Point Well Taken - 07/08/05: Strategy

by Ferdinand T Cat
The problem with the War on Terror is not that we are in Iraq; it's that we are not also in Iran, Syria, and Saudi Arabia.

You know the problem with this country? As soon as I learned about the London attack, I knew we were going to hear over and over again that we made a mistake by going into Iraq instead of focusing on bin Laden. What's wrong with this country is that I successfully predicted the future and there is no chance the National Enquirer is going to add me to its list of psychics.

So how do we go about hunting bin Laden? As usual, the left is quick to criticize Bush, but slow to offer an alternative approach, with the possible exception of this Huffington Post writer who suggests a full capitulation. (Granted, he speaks entirely in question mode, so that he has plausible deniability, but he's not fooling me and he shouldn't fool you.)

It would have been nice if drawing the line in the sand at Iraq had protected Britain and Spain. It will be even nicer if nation-building in Iraq defuses the whole Mideast powder keg. I think, however, that three thousand people and two buildings destroyed in the space of a few hours is a reasonable argument for being pro-active, and I fail to see how hunting one man is going to change the hearts and minds of the faithful.

I sometimes wonder exactly what we need to do in Iraq to make the terrorists happy. Do we need to kill more women? Do we need to loot people's possessions in order to buy porno tapes? Exactly what wonderful aspect of Saddam's reign is the important one? There's only so much we can do, folks. Liberals are always telling us that we need to do more talking. Fine: talk to me, people. If Iraq's future is not a constitution and an elected government, then what the hell is it supposed to be?

Sorry. Apparently, even a superior life form has its limits.

Respectfully submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat
