Notes from Ferdy - Fatwah Weirdness
Late Saturday night I received an EMAIL from Gullyborg of Resistance is Futile alerting me to this post. Apparently, the FBI has come across internet chatter from suspected terrorists that one of Gullyborg's blogging friends-- Chris the Anarchangel-- is the target of an Islamic death sentence.
This is one of those cases where human nature has worked to your disadvantage.
First off, Chris started this chain of events by desecrating the Koran on video. He did this to prove that all this whining about insensitivity and moral equivalence doesn't bother him. Spitting in someone's face to prove that you're not intimidated is a completely human impulse. Cats try to do the minimum damage in any given situation, which is why we can sleep 20 hours a day and still kill enough stuff to survive.
Second, it is worth noting that long-time fatwah death sentence alumnus Salman Rushdie is still alive, as are his succession of wives and girlfriends. The price on his head is over $2 million, while the only reward for killing Chris would be bragging rights amongst the other Muslims in the New Mexico prison system.
Talk is cheap, but assassination is expensive. It took years of planning to take out the World Trade Center, and it was a stationary target.
Finally, while I believe that Chris has every right to go around desecrating the Koran, I do not at all approve of it. Jesus Christ taught that we should love our enemies instead of trying to piss them off. I know Christianity is very much out of fashion these days, but when I put Christ's way of thinking next to an endless cycle of desecration and death threats, it seems pretty clear that he knew what he was talking about.
Respectfully submitted,
Ferdinand T. Cat
