Confused Americans for Truth - The Hitler Effect

by Ferdinand T Cat

It is not uncommon when trolling left-leaning blogs to come across something like this article at the Progressive Blog Alliance. The general formula is to find something Adolf Hitler has in common with President Bush, then demand vigilance against the rising tide of fascism in this country. In this particular case, the author is focusing on Hitler's use of Christianity to justify an erosion of basic civil liberties.

To understand the appeal, the absolute, mesmerizing, and intoxicating drive behind Hitler's success, one must go beyond the inequities of the Versailles Treaty and delve into the mysterious association that Herr Hitler placed upon the Christian religion. Don't think that Adolf was way off into some cultic, overtly demonic world of fantasy and influence. True, the occult most assuredly was deeply engaged in his thinking and outlook—but the use of legitimate Christian imagery was his forte. He both understood the need to mobilize the masses and the religion that alone could sway their fidelity to his cause.

What's odd about this kind of analysis is that right in front of our noses there is already a political movement that is driven by religious fundamentalism, rejects democracy, and even sanctions the killing of Jews. This political movement is frequently condemned by conservatives while liberals call for moderation in our response to it.

The problem is, George W. Bush is also opposed to this modern form of anti-Semitic fascism. In order to sign on to the fight, liberals would have to decide whether it's more important to hate the President or to declare war on fascism.

I'm afraid I already know the answer. After all, the guy who founded Christianity was very much against hate, and we know how liberals feel about Christianity.

Respectfully submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat
