The Cat's Meow - 08/09/05: Grief

by Ferdinand T Cat
It is completely inappropriate to expect rational behavior from someone who's lost a child.

As reported by Drudge, Cindy Sheehan, the California mother and media darling who is conducting a protest against the Iraq War in the name of her slain-soldier son, sang a different tune a year ago. Then, she was impressed by Bush's sympathy and concern. Now, she only remembers a callous airhead.

I have no doubt that she believes in what she is doing and is being honest in her own mind. Nonetheless, she would be better off if people let her self-destruct in private rather than using her to advance a political agenda.

When a tragedy strikes, it is a natural human impulse to want to find meaning, to salvage good out of the horror. Casey Sheehan's death would have had meaning if it were to secure freedom for an oppressed people in a land that is running out of hope. George W. Bush is very skilled at making that point, and it's not surprising he sucked her into his view of things last year.

But if you allow yourself to succumb to the anti-war yammering of the Left, then you have a much harder task: you have to derail United States foreign policy. That's a pretty forlorn hope on which to hang your hat.

So here's the wager they've imposed on Cindy Sheehan: if she can force the United States to give in to the terrorists, she's redeemed the life of her son. Don't kid yourself: it was not Bush who stole her son. Bush believed in her son and what her son was doing. It's the progressive movement that has taken the meaning away, a movement that offers a purely materialistic world without a God or an afterlife the cushion the grief. Her only hope to get meaning now is to let the terrorists take back Iraq. Does anybody think that a terrorist-ruled Iraq is going to be any better off than a Communist Indo-China?

Like I said. Not rational.

Respectfully submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat

I suppose I could have named this week’s Carnival “The Cindy Sheehan Cluebat Hall of Fame Edition.” Judging by volume of posts, she would have been an automatic inductee. Heck, we even could have waived the mandatory 3 year waiting p... [Read More]

I agree. But she should really rethink this. For her own sake. How much better to believe that your son died fighting for what he believed in. But as you said, she isn't rational.
