Laura Ingraham - The Stars Are in Alignment

by Ferdinand T Cat

So how's this for a coincidence: Laura Ingraham, whose most recent book is titled Shut Up and Sing, comes back from vacation at the same time Barbra Streisand stages another comeback. Laura's show today featured a segment of Streisand's new song Stranger in a Strange Land overlaid with some of the singer's more bizzare quotes from the last few years.

Streisand has been mixing work with politics since the Nixon/McGovern election of 1972. Perhaps for that reason, Bruce always assumed she was a little more thoughtful than the typical Hollywood liberal. This impression was shattered in 1995, when she gave a speech called The Artist as Citizen. The speech (co-written by Peter Jennings) was a big success, but she crashed and burned during the question and answer period. After that, Rush Limbaugh began using the phrase "pure Barbra Streisand" to describe nonsensical statements, and the practice still continues today in some quarters.

More recently, Barbra's current husband James Brolin was picked to play Ronald Reagan in a CBS miniseries. Concern that Barbra's politics would change the tenor of the story eventually forced CBS to exile the series to Showtime. (This proved to be merely the first of two CBS cancellations during the November 2003 ratings sweep. Two weeks later they yanked a special about Michael Jackson due to the pop star's ongoing trial for child molestation.)

For the next few days, you can see Barbra's anti-war music video at Amazon.com; however, it won't be as fun as the version played on Laura's show.

Respectfully submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat
