Adventures with Bruce - Peg-Eye Nate and the Schaumburg Youth Orchestra

by Ferdinand T Cat

Nate playing trumpet at age 10All of Bruce's children are musically inclined-- Barb Gigamaster plays the viola, her twin sister Maggie does classical guitar, The Girl Who Feeds Me plays the bagpipes, The Gremlin plays percussion, and Peg-Eye Nate does the trumpet. When he was in the eighth grade, Nate joined the logcal park district youth orchestra. All of his teachers at school immediately noticed an improvement in his general mood.

There were two aspects of Nate's orchestra membership that Bruce found mysterious. Nate preferred the orchestra to his school band, even though the band played a more modern style of music, one that a teenager would normally find more appealing. In addition, Nate insisted on remaining as third-chair trumpet, allowing less experienced players to enter the orchestra at the second position.

It was while watching a rehearsal a few years ago that Bruce discovered the simple truth that made sense out of all of this: in the orchestra, the third-chair trumpet sits next to the all-female French Horn section.

You see, this makes perfect sense. You'd be surprised at how many times I have heard similar reports from orchestra members...
