Illini Carnival - Carnival of the Vicious, Invading Paleface Bastards #2

by Ferdinand T Cat

Welcome to the second Carnival of the Vicious, Invading Paleface Bastards, a roundup of articles about Illinois or from Illinois bloggers. It's a precipient time here in the Prairie State. The White Sox have not yet choked, former governer Ryan is not yet convicted, and the new open-road tolling system is not yet showing any signs of being completed on schedule.

If you want to be in next week's carnival, use our handy Carnival Submission Form. Thanks to all of you who did so this week!

The fun begins below the fold.

RICK MORAN at Rightwing Nuthouse submitted RHUBARB!, in which he discusses the controverial play which handed the White Sox their second-game win in the ALCS and delves into the history of the term "rhubarb". (Cat lovers know that Rhubarb is also the name of the cat who owned a baseball team-- the New York Loons-- in the book by journalist H Allen Smith.)

Lifelong Chicagoan Chaote at The Chaote Speaks submitted Democratic Torchbearer, a thoughtful essay about the importance of democracy and America's role in spreading it. Given that this weekend the Iraqi people are exercising their democratic rights, the essay is particularly timely.

Mr. Right at The Right Place submitted The Frustration Factor, in which he talks about baseball teams that have had to wait decade after decade without getting a chance to play in the World Series. Chicago's two teams are currently leading the pack in this dubious achievement.

Omnibus Driver at Leslie's Omnibus submitted Bus Fumes, in which she rants on several topics, including the rather disheveled state of the Illinois Republican Party.

Lennie at Cross Blogging takes Representative Melissa Bean (D, Illinois) to task for her vote against a bill to expand our oil refinery capacity.

Over at Extreme Wisdom, Illinois political activist Bruno Behrend tells us why Bush has already won the war in Iraq. Bruno's radio show can be heard 8am to 10am every Sunday on WIND-Chicago.

Rich Miller at Capitol Fax discusses luck, losing, the Cubs and the White Sox in Get Over It, Part 2.

Michael van Winkle the Armchair Analyst discusses the problems of a blogging University of Chicago professor who was denied tenure.

The Red Chicagoan has an interesting news tidbit: an SUV has made the EPA's Top Ten Most Fuel-Efficient list.

Finally, Dog blogger Pluto has something in common with me: he doesn't understand the females of his species, either.

That's all for this week. Next week, it will be a totally different world. We'll know whether or not the White Sox will be going to the World Series. We'll know more about George Ryan's chances of staying out of jail. We'll know the results of the Iraqi referendum. But we still won't know when they'll be finished with the open-road tolling system.

Respectfully submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat
