Notes from Ferdy - Florida Shoots First
Aggressive-Voice Daily has an article regarding a new effort by The Brady Campaign in response to Florida's new law loosening the requirements for shooting criminals. In particular, you are allowed to "stand your ground" and use deadly force if you believe "it is necessary to do so to prevent death or great bodily harm to [yourself] or to another person or to prevent the commission of a forcible felony".
The Brady Campaign has this to say.
In Florida, avoid disputes. Use special caution in arguing with motorists on Florida roads.
This is good advice if, for example, you are arguing with somebody about whether or not you'll shoot him if he doesn't give you his car; however, I have been unable to find anything in the new statute that implies deadly force is appropriate when somebody cuts you off while you're trying to get into the fast lane.
The Brady people are engaging in scare tactics in the hopes that they can put a dent in Florida's tourist trade and force a change in the law. I find that sort of fear-mongering unacceptable. As a superior life form, I've put my mind to the task of formulating a response that might help undo the damage caused by the Brady Campaign. The following advertising text is provided free of charge to the Florida Tourism Industry Marketing Corporation.
Worried about crime in Florida? Don't be. We're safer than ever! Thanks to new legislation, if you can't shoot the guy trying to rob or rape you, one of our over 800,000 gun-owning citizens can!
Respectfully submitted,
