Confused Americans for Truth - Indiana Assisted Reproduction Fire Out of Control

by Ferdinand T Cat

I admit to being a bit at a loss as to what I should do. Yesterday, I wrote this article in which I explained how the story of Indiana State Senator Patricia Miller's Assisted Reproduction bill was being mis-reported. The story has already caught fire, and is now appearing in the Chicago Sun-Times with the headline Ind. bill would ban gays, singles from assisted reproduction.

Here is my problem. The sections of the bill concerned with assisted reproduction both make the following statement (emphasis mine):

This chapter does not apply to a child who is conceived by the following:
(1) Sexual intercourse.(2) Assisted reproduction in which the intended father is the sperm donor and the intended mother is the egg donor. (3) A gestational carrier. (4) Surrogacy.

The purpose of this bill is to define the situations in which a person is considered the legal parent of a child for which he or she is not a genetic parent. The net effect is that if you intend to be the parent of a child that is not biologically your own, the rules are the same as adoption, which in the State of Indiana requires that the intended parents be married and not have a violent crime in their past.

To state that singles cannot engage in assisted reproduction under this bill is wrong; however, Bruce has verified that even Senator Miller's own staff does not understand the thing. It is therefore entirely possible that were the bill to become law, it would be enforced the way the Sun-Times thinks it works instead of as stated in the actual language of the bill.

So, does the truth even matter?

Respectfully submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat

The state of Indiana does not require that you be married to be an adoptive or foster parent. That change was legislatively attempted several times but went down in increasingly hot flames every time.

The people of the state of Indiana simply do not approve of these sorts of government intrusions into people's privacy and medical care.

I stand corrected. The adoption comparison was a quote from Senator Miller in a newspaper account. I can't believe I fell for it.

The bill has been withdrawn; however, the paper trail aspects are still necessary in my opinion, and I hope that the baby is not thrown out with the bathwater.
