Dog Bites Man - Iraq Election Turns Out Peaceful

by Ferdinand T Cat

I can't see this as anything other than wonderful news: according to an AP report, the Iraqi constitutional referendum occurred under relatively peaceful circumstances. Of the 1200 polling places, only 5 were attacked by terrorists, wounding only seven voters with no fatalities. I know that seven people is seven too many, but it does not change the fact that the Iraqi army and coalition forces have demonstrated an ability to keep the peace.

Sunni turnout was relatively high. In the January elections, a Sunni boycott resulted in a big victory for Shiite and Kurdish candidates. This was a huge tactical mistake, since it deprived the Sunni minority of any real leverage in the formation of the constitution. As a result, the Sunnis are expected to vote against ratification. If they succeed, the constitutional process would have to start over; however, it would still be an established fact that elections work, and that's a good thing.

Finally, I would like to point out that the statements by the soldiers at the Bush teleconference have turned out to be more or less correct, so it really doesn't matter any more whether or not they were coached, does it?

Respectfully submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat

If I had a dollar for every story like this that never made it into the mainstream, supposedly unbiased media, I'd be rich enough to quit my job.
