Notes from Ferdy - Possible EMAIL Virus Shows Incompetence
A new spam email is making the rounds. The email claims to have a photo from an upcoming pornographic movie starring Mike Tyson and Jenna Jameson.
The email has several characteristics that make me think it's designed to transmit a virus: it describes a news event that didn't really happen, identical versions were sent to several of Bruce's EMAIL addresses, and the attachment is a small ZIP file. Our normal procedure in such cases is to examine the ZIP file's directory for stealthy file names (that is, a file whose name contains a large number of spaces used to hide the file type), then download the latest virus definitions and scan for recent viruses. This procedure was thwarted by the fact that the ZIP file in question is invalid.
So, my theory is that this is a viral EMAIL, but it was done incompetently enough that it isn't a threat. As always, I greet any sign of incompetence on the part of hackers as welcome news. Let's hope we see more of it.
Respectfully submitted,
Ferdinand T. Cat
