Illini Carnival - Carnival of the Vicious, Invading Paleface Bastards #8
Welcome to the eighth carnival of Illinois bloggers and Illinois issues. This is an auspicious week, as our wonderful new Open-Road Tolling System has been unveiled. If you are not from Illinois, you may not be aware of this incredible leap into the future of toll-based driving. The key is the new IPASS, a radio device that identifies a car as it passes through a toll booth, automatically charging the toll to the car owner's account. Previously, if you had an IPASS, you had the option of driving through a special express lane without slowing or stopping. With Open Road Tolling, it's completely different. Instead of driving under a pair of ugly steel beams with sensing equipment attached, you drive under ugly steel archways with a sign saying Rob Blagojevich, Governor attached.
It's not just a highway project: it's an advertising campaign. Welcome to Illinois, where the phrase "blue state" describes so much more than what happens in a presidential election.
The fun begins below the fold.
First out of the gate, Dr. Claude Mariottini, a professor of Old Testament at Northern Baptist Seminary in Wheaton, submitted The NIV and the TNIV: Two Bibles with Contradictory Views, in which he explains a serious problem with the new Today's New International Version of the Bible: one of its passages contradicts the New International Version, creating a dilemma for people who believe the Bible is the inerrant word of God.
TFS Magnum submitted 911 Response: 8 minutes or 20?, which discusses a domestic violence incident in Chicago which ended in two deaths by gunfire, even though Chicago is supposed to be a firearm-free zone.
Cross Blogging's questions for the latest Christian Views Symposium are about abortion, and they're very disturbing. The article is called I'm Alive Already!
Free Will has two stories about Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich. In Locked Away In An Overgrown Mansion he describes the governor's aloof, reclusive nature when it comes to lobbying the Federal government on the state's behalf. In Mr. Charisma, he describes the governor's habit of hiring a film crew with state funds to make sure his public events get the proper coverage. Maybe if he took his film crew with him, he would feel more comfortable testifying before Congress.
In Blagojevich Picks a Winner, Random Acts of Kindness talks about a new plan to ban the sale of junk food in Illinois schools. Governments love doing this sort of thing, because it looks good in the newspapers. There are, however, occasional side effects. At The Girl's old school, a ban on candy sales cut the funding for the extra-curricular reading program.
Bruno Behrend of
Rich Miller of Capitol Fax has started a new group blog for Illinois Bloggers. He talks about it in Illinoize. Mr. Miller has made a huge mistake, however, since none of the participants are superior life forms. Finally, The Hungry Writer talks about being in Kansas City. Bruce says you can't understand it fully unless you've grown up in Chicago. Apparently, he used to work at one of the dilapidated theatres. That's it for this week. We will see you again next week. If you want to be included, use our handy-dandy Carnival Submit Form. Until then, this carnival is Respectfully submitted,
Ferdinand T. Cat

I think that new IPASS sounds like a brilliant idea. I don't live in Illinois, but I recently visited there and went through tons of toll roads, and I just can't imagine going on them on a daily basis!! I think it sounds great!

The really cool thing about IPass is that they didn't jack up the tolls on them like they did for all the people coming to the state only once to spend a few tourist dollars. I need to drive down from Milwaukee a couple times a year; the new toll structure makes the old free highways worth a few extra minutes.
