Web Site News - Catching up on Old Business
A lot of stuff has been rotting on my to-do list for a while. Rather than do four small posts, I'm going to do one big post.
Word of Blog is a blog designed specifically to allow people to post advertisements and badges for web sites. Bruce submitted an ad for the Illini Carnival: you can see it here. The most amazing thing about the site is the page where you submit an ad. Viewed in Firefox, a section near the bottom of the page is shifted upward one pixel, as shown in the magnified screen fragment to the left. Even Bruce can't figure out how they managed to pull that off.- Our good friend Bruno Behrend of Extreme Wisdom alerted me to a new device for transporting cats safely, the Tabby Tote. Bruce says he is trying to buy one of these things, but he wants it to be a surprise, so I haven't looked at it yet. Silly humans.
- Eric of Myopic Zeal has figured out how to create Google definitions. It would be REALLY BAD if his methods fell into the wrong hands, so I'm currently finding out what it would take to send Eric to one of those secret CIA prisons.
- Bruce has updated our software so that it will let him know when trackbacks are being throttled. (Throttling is what causes the annoying 403 error when you send a trackback.) Apparently, the default throttle limit was set too low, and a lot of trackbacks were failing. I especially feel sorry for Peace Moonbeam, who got throttled with her very first trackback. This has been fixed. We have also changed the error message so that it makes more sense. The problem is not that "you are posting trackbacks too quickly", the problem is that we're receiving too many trackbacks in the space of one hour.
