Laura Ingraham - Jimmy Carter's Prescription for a Better Christianity
On today's Laura Ingraham show, she had excerpts of Larry King's recent interview of former President Jimmy Carter, who is promoting his new book. The primary sound bite (which actually won the Sound Bite of the Week contest), was a definition of a "fundamentalist". Carter is deeply concerned about the effect fundamentalists are having in politics, and points out that both Islamic terrorists and Christian Republicans are embracing these dangerous value systems. Carter's definition was as follows.
A fundamentalist, almost by definition, as I describe, is a a very strong male religious leader, always a man, who believes that he is completely wedded to God, has a special privilege and relationship to God, above others.
Laura expressed confusion about Carter's point, but as a superior life form it's very easy for me to figure out what he means: he's talking about Jesus Christ! Jesus was a male, and there's no question he had a special relationship to God above ours. This also explains the link Carter forges between Christianity and Islam: Mohammed was, after all, the Comforter predicted by Jesus to come after him, so both religions have Jesus in their past.
So, conservatives who are concerned that their conception of Christianity is flawed, here's how to get yourself back on the right path: Stop listening to this Jesus fellow. I know it's going to be difficult at first, but Carter has been teaching Sunday School for 65 years, so there has to be some way to make it work.
Respectfully submitted,

Cat,
Some nice irony here. Appreciate your point. Fundamentalism is really about holding fast to the fundamentals of the faith. Not extremism. In the case of Islam, however, the fundamental tenets of their religion borders on the extreme (jihad, etc), whereas true faith in Christ will result in a fundamental change of life from worldliness toward godliness.
