Confused Americans for Truth - Just Try to Prove the Earth is Round
This morning I wanted to wrtie something about the possibility of the French learning anything from the riots during the past two weeks, but Kender of Kender's Musings has already stated the case pretty well in this post at the Wide Awakes web site.
Liberals and conservatives both are continually confounded by the inability of the other side to see the obvious. The problem is that the obvious is not always easy to see. The social nature of humanity makes it easier to accept facts from your friends than from your opponents. This is an entirely sensible philosophy. When The People for the American Way suggest that Bush should have nominated a moderate to the Supreme Court, it's not hard to guess that they're more interested in their own goals than the President's.
It is this survival trait that informs the analysis of Tuesday's elections: both Republicans and Democrats see hopeful signs for their future.
The joke is that this built-in bias is the strongest argument you can make for the folly of the liberal model. So long as government is run by humans, It's going to be run by biased individuals who cannot be trusted to decide fairly, and the more power it has to regulate people's lives, the more injustice it will create.
Which brings us back to France. See, it's obvious that giving people money will make them happy just as it's obvious that the Earth is flat. In the face of this obvious truth, it does no good to point out the curvature of the horizon or the way shadows work, because there could be a hundred other explanations for those anomalies. The truth is, if the Earth were round, the only safe place to live would be the north pole, and no matter how far you walk, the reason that you haven't fallen off the edge is that you just haven't walked far enough.
Respectfully submitted,
Ferdinand T. Cat
