Notes from Ferdy - Seeking a Decision by Al-Qaeda in Wilson v. Alito

by Ferdinand T Cat

One of the hidden assumptions that separates liberals and conservatives is the belief in unintended consequences. It is skepticism about unintended consequences that leads people to believe Bush deliberately wanted Katrina victims to suffer. It is a firm belief in such consequences that makes conservatives blame bureaucratic regulation: an attempt to protect women from harassment had an unintended consequence that slowed the response to an immediate disaster.

There is no question that liberals hate Bush. The unintended consequence of seeing him suffer, however, is that it strengthens the case for the terrorists. The entire Joe Wilson story portrays the Bush Administration as a corrupt cabal rushing into an unjust war and breaking the law to smear a righteous whistleblower. This is exactly what terrorists want to hear. A corrupt, unjust foe is more likely to lose heart and leave.

But there is another story in the news today: the Judge Alito nomination, and it paints a very different picture. The George W. Bush who nominated Samuel Alito is unconcerned about his critics across the aisle and committed to his conservative base. The real Dubya is back, and he's not slinking around and hiding any more.

An unintended consequence is that this sends a very discouraging message to the terrorists. Make sure they listen.

Respectfully submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat
