Confused Americans for Truth - Desperately Seeking Community in a Fancy Box
Every now and then, you have to wonder what the Democrats are thinking. The Washington Times posted an article today about the slowly-forming Democratic message for 2008. Here's my favorite part.
Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean has commissioned confidential polling and analyses that suggest candidates in 2006 and 2008 should frame their policies -- and attacks on Republicans -- around the context of community. It seems to be the emerging message from a party that has been bereft of one. "What's happening in this country is we're losing our sense of common purpose," [Iowa Gov. Tom] Vilsack told Florida Democrats. "We're losing a sense of community."
Once again, the focus is on framing the message rather than the message itself. I have no doubt a sense of shared purpose would be welcome, but it is difficult to implement the sharing without knowing what the purpose is! After all, we could develop a real useful sense of shared purpose by simply agreeing that we'd like to see democracy in Iraq.
Now, I'm sure some of you think it's to our benefit that the Democrats are incapable of developing a real plan for the future; however, until the Left gets its act together, politics is going to be nothing more than negative attack piled upon negative attack.
So here's a nice little metaphor that I hope will help get the Democrats back on track in time for the New Year.
Imagine that you've just been given a really pretty holiday gift wrapped in beautiful iridescent rainbow tissue paper and an intricate ribbon arrangement. Now, imagine that when you open the box, it's empty.
Telling people that you need until sometime in 2006 to come up with the proper gift is not going to lessen the disappointment.
Respectfully submitted,
