EMAIL Hell - New eBay Phishing Trick

by Ferdinand T Cat

This is becoming such a habit I thought I'd better add a category for it.

There is a new type of phishing email on the loose. The example we received was disguised as a message from an eBay customer about a completely innocuous topic.

Hello,

Hi, I signed up for Ebay and I've been an Ebay member for about 15 days. So, I'm carrying an "icon" where it says "I am a member since less than 30 days". A few days ago, I managed to sell an item. The guy who bought mine left me a positive feedback. But still, mine's got a "zero" feedback? Why is it that? If I click on my profile, I can see that he left me a feedback. But the feedback counting doesn't go from zero to one. Is it because I'm a member who's been registered for less than 30 days?.

Regards,
Gretta.

All of the links in the EMAIL lead to the eBay domain; however, the Respond Now button takes you to a location inside optimumsites.com, where the site's owners will use Optimum's advanced CGI support to steal your eBay identity and passwords.

I especially liked this little footnote at the bottom of the email.

Learn how you can protect yourself from spoof (fake) emails at: http://pages.ebay.co.uk/education/spooftutorial.

Of course, as a superior life form, I can spot these things more easily that the rest of you. Well, okay, so maybe it helps that they send the EMAIL to me and the account is in my pet's name.

Anyway, be careful. The bag of tricks keeps changing, but the evil intent remains the same.

Respectfully submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat

That's a good one. I haven't seen that one yet. It's just a matter of time, I suppose. It sounds like something that should be reported to reportphishing@antiphishing.org.
