Confused Americans for Truth - Tolerance and Understanding in the Shadow of Christmas

by Ferdinand T Cat

One thing that bothers me about modern political discourse is an unwillingness to understand other people's viewpoints. I think this is a result of the fact that humans are at the top of the food chain. To a cat, this understanding process is a life-and-death issue. For example, if I pursue a rabbit through an elaborately-manicured flower bed, it's important that I understand this will lead to me being chased by a large, angry man with a sharp gardening implement. I may not agree with his sentiments, but I do understand them.

Nowadays we seem to spend a lot of time understanding, but it's always aimed at people who want to kill us or people committing crimes. I'm sure many Christians believe they would get more sympathy if they went on a rampage in the inner city, but most probably think the only way to get sympathy is to not be Christians, and that is probably why this year they're drawing a line in the sand.

It is in the context of that understanding that I would like to address Jack's comment on my Happy Holidays post. Here's the basic gist.

If I believed that they were really being harmed or pushed around then I would be the first to stand and fight with them.

But I don't believe that. Xmas is a federal holiday. The overwhelming majority of businesses close down for it.

Virtually everywhere you go there are signs of it.

I don't believe that saying happy holidays does anything to marginalize or impugn the Xmas holiday.

I've always wondered why this argument works: "It doesn't bother me, so why should it bother you?" Well, if it doesn't bother you, why are you spending so much effort to ridicule it? Just once I'd like to see someone argue that because it's no big deal to them, they're going to let the other guy have his way. Instead, we're told that it's a trivial, silly thing, so you'd better damn well do it our way or go home!.

Before we go, there's one more point I want to make. Later in the ame comment, Jack says this:

There are huge numbers of homeless people. There are families who have lost sons/daughters/fathers/mothers to war/natural disaster.

They have real problems and real issues.

I see this kind of argument all the time. However, if you're really worried about the homeless, you would probably know about things like this. It's a program that provides shelter for the homeless in Christian churches and it's staffed entirely by unpaid Christian volunteers. Barb and Maggie and The Girl Who Feeds Me all donate time, and if it's so gosh-darn important to do something about the homeless, then instead of dismissing these Christians as useless cretins, you should persuade the ACLU to divert to this worthy cause some of the millions it spends each year trying to eradicate every trace of Christianity from the public square!

Until then, the sieve should stop complaining that the collander leaks.

Respectfully submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat

Good thoughts. Tolerance means that we honor another person's right to disagree. It doesn't mean condoning that position or giving up your own beliefs. True tolerance is something both sides of any debate often lack. lgp
