Confused Americans for Truth - File-sharing and Terrorism

by Ferdinand T Cat

Bruce is a software developer, so copyrights are very important to him. For that reason, even when it was legal he refused to use file-sharing services that allow you to download files from other users' computers. Bruce and Nate both use the new Napster, which is the legitimate music service that shares the name of the very first file-sharing service.

While the United States takes a dim view of file-sharing, it is legal in other countries. In 2003, a file-sharing service called Kazaa set up in the Netherlands to avoid prosecution in US courts. This means that if you sign up for a service that says it's "completely legal", you may be doing something that's illegal for you even though it's perfectly legal for them.

However, there is an even worse danger than getting fined for illegal downloading. Since you are using a file-sharing service that's operating out of a foreign country, you are indulging in international file transmission, which means your activities may be tracked by an NSA data mining operation.

As someone whose supply of mozzarella cheese depends on copyrighted material, I would ask everybody to think twice before getting involved in file-sharing. If, however, you decide to risk it, be sure not to download any songs with names like Yes, Osama, I Received the Message or I've Really Got the Bomb.

Respectfully submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat
