Blogging Hell - More Fun With Comment Spam
For some unknown reason, we are being flooded with comment spam on my Monkeys and Typewriters epigram. Every morning Bruce will find around 300 comments in the junk list, all submitted within the space of a few minutes and all targeting that one article. What I find most interesting, however, is the variety of topics. In addition to the standard stuff about gambling, drugs, and cheap home loans, spammers are now peddling duty-free cigarettes, cars, and even nativity scenes.
There is something very ironic about the nativity scene thing, but more than that, it indicates we are rapidly approaching the point where keyword filtering will no longer be an adequate means for detecting spam. This is why we've switched to CAPTCHA coding, even though we know most of you hate the things. The battle between bloggers and spammers is a technological arms race, and the spammers have all the advantages, because they don't have to worry about false positives.
Still, you have to wonder about the nativity scenes. I know the God of Abraham is very busy, but it would be nice if he could spare a lightning bolt or two for spammers peddling scale models of his only begotten son's birth.
Respectfully submitted,
Ferdinand T. Cat
