Notes from Ferdy - Looking at Immigration from a Capitalist Perspective
As I have said before, capitalism is a law of nature, and you violate laws of nature at your peril. As long as life in the United States is significantly better than life in Mexico, people are going to want to move up here from down there. This will be the case regardless of whether or not California was stolen from Aztecs at gunpoint, people are being driven by racism, or we think of them as guest workers instead of immigrants.
Sealing a 2000-mile border is a very expensive proposition, and no congressman is going to want to give up his pet bridge-building project for a plan that may or may not work. The obvious answer is to work to reform Mexico's government so it serves the people instead of the politicians; unfortunately, that sounds too much like what we're trying to do in Iraq. That means we have to think outside the box: we have to make life in the United States so bad that no one would want to come here. There is only one man who can do that job-- former President Jimmy Carter.
Don't laugh! Carter only served four years in the Oval Office, so technically he's eligible to run again. He won the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize, which gives him all sorts of credibility, and he has continued to keep himself in the public eye with books and speeches. More important, he proved back in the late Seventies that he can completely destroy the U.S. economy.
The Democrats have been looking for a way to exploit the immigration issue and I think this one is a real winner. I can see the bumper stickers in my mind:
Only Carter Can Stop Illegal Immigration
Personally, I can't see a downside to having Carter head up the Democratic ticket in 2008.
Respectfully submitted,

I can think of one downside: Carter has already proven himself to be wholly incapable of dealing with problems in Iran.

You know, I wish that were funnier- in other words, you might have a point.

Cat,
Did destroying the economy result in reduced illegal immigration? If you could find a causal relationship, your ideal might not be quite so satirical and more practical.
