Notes from Ferdy - In Which I Paean Ann Coulter

by Ferdinand T Cat

Like many of you, I have mixed feelings about Ann Coulter. On the one hand, she delights in vexing her political opponents. It is wrong to take pleasure in the discomfort of others, so what she's doing is wrong.

On the other hand, she makes me laugh.

There is always the temptation, when one is a superior life form, to start listing things that should and shouldn't be funny. For example, one could argue that the Chuck Jones Road Runner cartoons are essentially a one-joke show with a limited premise, while State of the Union is sophisticated, topical, and insightful. The truth is, however, that the Road Runner is funny and State of the Union consistently falls flat.

Ann makes us laugh because she dares to say things no one else will say, and her statements are so outrageous that even people who hate her end up talking about her latest book. Last year I argued that Cindy Sheehan's protest was more about generating certain feelings instead of solving the problems of the Middle East. I made an effort to stay just inside the borders of good taste. As a result, the article wasn't one-tenth as convincing as Ann's infamous Commander-in-Grief column.

The problem here is not Ann Coulter, it's David Letterman. Back in January, Letterman attacked Bill O'Reilly's criticism of Cindy Sheehan on the basis of the fact O'Reilly hadn't lost a child in the Iraq War. That's an idiotic argument, but it had traction because we've reached a point where opinions are judged based on who people are instead of whether or not what they're saying makes any sense. If anyone can tell me of a way to change this situation without a full-scale New-York-Times-bestselling kick in the teeth, I'm all ears.

Until then, I'm recommending Godless to everyone. Grab a copy and then put yourself in a highly public place so people can see you reading it.

Respectfully submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat

Great take. I have trouble with sarcasm for that reason as well. I like Mike Adams for example at Townhall.com but dang if he isn't mean sometimes. Now does the other side deserve it? Hmm. lgp
PS,Thanks for the link

Hi Ferdy,

I have no problem with Ann's views or the way she presents them. Since when does the left ONLY get to be meanspirited, nasty, and down right cruel? True-two wrongs do not make a right, however, Ann's right. The people that dished it out just cannot take it back when it hits them.

I am sorry the "Jersey-Girls" lost their husbands and their children lost their fathers. There are no words for that kind of horrid loss.

However, they went there now they have to take the heat..and losing a loved one is not a good excuse to do what they did.

I lost a son ten years ago to a drunk driver...do I go around doing what they did blaming the law makers for laws that are not tough enough or they should of done something to prevent those types of disasters? No. Why? Because it does not make sense-there is no logic to it.

They are riding on the coat-tails of 9/11 making money-they are the only four doing so-why not the other thousands too? The "Jersey Girls" are wrong-they are sick- and sorry-they lost my sympathy and compassion for them a long time ago.

Coulter is the only one that had the GUTS to call it for what it was and check them and they and the left do not like it.

The right is too worried about being socially correct-hence, why the left gets away with the garbage they spew and it is all "GODLESS".

It seems Ann Coulter operates very much like an exceptional spiritual teacher by being willing to call a spade a spade. She sees that Liberals are hopelessly trapped in fantasy and self-deception and she calls them on it. If they refuse to look at themselves and the depths of their own hatred, they will attack her as hateful ones always attack. If her wake-up call is heard just a little, they will grow and open spiritually.
