Notes from Ferdy - More MySpace Craziness
You know, at some point people are going to have to accept the fact that if you post information in a public place, anybody can see it. This includes police, NSA analysts, child molesters, and 14-year-old armed robbers.
Two generations ago, stay-at-home mothers glued each neighborhood into a unit where everybody knew everybody else. Without the glue, we slowly became a nation of strangers, where any given address could house a quiet man who never bothered anybody but turns out to have been a practicing serial killer. Now the information age has once again connected us, but it's not the same. On the one hand, you can learn an incredible amount of stuff about people; on the other hand, the people you know all this information about may not exist.
It's time to stop being surprised by all this.
Respectfully submitted,
Ferdinand T. Cat

Amen.
The major problem is taxes.
Once the overall tax rate reached a certain point, it became impossible for the average family (with one median salary) to get by on a one-parent income.
Now, two workers in a family is the norm and more taxes go to fix the societal problems caused by this situation. It is a downward cycle that appears to have little hope of ending.
Simplification, to be sure, but basically the bottom line.
