Confused Americans for Truth - Of Course You Realize This Means War
It's no longer possible to pretend that Israel is engaged in a military strike against terrorists. Martial law is in effect in the north, and Hezbollah is firing missiles deeper into Israeli territory.
This is a full-scale war.
Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora has of course condemned Israel's offensive. He has also announced plans to take control of the entirety of his country. Lebanon is in the unusual position of being a neutral player in a war taking place on its own soil.
Israel's situation is very different from our own. Neither Mexico nor Canada is providing asylum to people who want to destroy us, so our politicians can pretend that better baggage inspectors are enough to protect us from further terror attacks. Better baggage inspectors, however, cannot protect you from a military raid across a land border. (They also can't protect you from people inside the country who want to blow up buildings, but that's another story.) We must not forget that the Lebanese incursion is a response to an act of war.
That act of war was committed by a militia force against a modern army. For several years now, we've had people talking about how the modern army in Iraq can't hope to win against a fanatical insurgency. Perhaps that gave Hezbollah the idea that they could win this one. But in fact, the government of Iraq was wiped out by U.S. forces very quickly. Even if you believe that Al-Qaeda is winning in Iraq (which I don't), the situation that enabled that win was the destruction of the original Iraqi government. To get itself in a similar situation, Hezbollah would have to be reduced from the effective government of southern Lebanon to a scattered bunch of religious fanatics building home-made bombs.
There is some concern about involvement by Iran. A small Iranian force is not going to make a difference, and a large Iranian force would have to contend with the fact that Iran's largest borders are with Afghanistan and Iraq. There are American troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. Israel also has functional nuclear cruise missiles.
The other wild card is Syria, but Israel already controls part of Syria, and it would be insane for them to risk losing more of it. Syria also has to consider it could not expect any help from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Egypt, or Jordan.
So, the question is not how to stop the violence. This is not violence, it's a war, and if history is any indication, it will stop when Israel wins. The real question is what to do when it's over: what is the safest way for Israel to prevent another terrorist group from setting up shop on its northern border? If we don't answer that question, then this is going to happen again, and I don't think anybody wants that.
Respectfully submitted,
Ferdinand T. Cat

Well, Ferd, ol' furry pal, I have to take exception to this remark: "Neither Mexico nor Canada is providing asylum to people who want to destroy us..."
Mexico sends its citizens in their thousands every night to invade our territory, with the mission to change our culture into theirs.
Canada harbors untold millions of Muslims, with the mission to change Canadian culture to theirs, and then to move on us.
At some point these two cultures will meet in the middle, and that middle is us.
Don't forget, if we American humans get fed into the sausage machine, you don't get your customary evening tuna fix.
Nor your late-night chasetime with the feather-thing on the end of the stringonastick.

You are probably correct, but the point is not that the United States is safe, it's that our problems are easier to ignore.

"Of course, you realize, this means war" sounds like a Bugs Bunny quote. But then Bugs usually quoted or misquoted others. Do you happen to have a source going back further than BB?

Yes. The line was originally spoken by Groucho Marx in the film "Duck Soup", but I was quoting Bugs, whose success rate in combat is similar to that of the Israeli Defense Forces.
