Laura Ingraham - Sectarian Violence Continues in Iraq

by Ferdinand T Cat

Today Laura Ingraham opened her show with a story from the Washington Post about an assault against Shi'ite Muslims in Iraq by Sunni Muslims. Here's the Post article's first paragraph.

Masked attackers with heavy machine guns mounted on pickup trucks slaughtered at least 40 people in a crowded market area south of Baghdad on Monday, hurling grenades to blow up merchants at their counters and shooting down mothers as they fled with their children, witnesses and authorities said.

Laura was very upset about this, so I had Bruce do some research.

A later paragraph demonstrates that some Iraqis still don't understand how the rule of law works.

Leaders of two Shiite religious parties, that of powerful cleric Maqtada al-Sadr and the smaller Fadhila bloc, withdrew from parliament indefinitely over the Mahmudiyah attack, storming out of a session of the legislative body.

Weakening the government in response to a crime is exactly the wrong response. Instead, you find a way to punish the people responsible. The reason that's not happening is a failure to understand the nature of violence.

The Washington Post doesn't understand the nature of violence either, because the story's second paragraph starts this way.

The military-style assault on unarmed civilians in the mostly Shiite city of Mahmudiyah lasted 30 minutes and was vicious even for a country besieged daily by bombs and coldblooded attacks.

Bang. The first thing the Post does is classify the atrocity along ethnic boundaries.

The cause of violence is not Shi'ites living side-by-side with Sunnis, it's regular people living side-by-side with evil, murderous scumbags. The Iraqi government needs to find evil, murderous scumbags and put them down. Are any Sunnis living in America or Great Britain killing Shi'ites? Of course not! And it has NOTHING to do with where American troops are stationed, who has weapons of mass destruction, and whether or not Israel is occupying the Gaza strip. It has to do with the fact that the punishment for mass murder is based on the number of people you've killed instead of your religion.

The entire Middle East is engulfed in this idiotic pattern of thought in which people think they're entitled to land because they have the same religion as other people who were mistreated three generations back. It's not going to stop until we treat people as people responsible for their own actions regardless of race, creed, or choice of headgear.

Liberalism cannot do this. Liberalism is busy understanding root causes. Although liberals hate ethnic violence, the desire to understand creates a patina of respectability for people eager to find an excuse for revenge. It is left to us, as conservatives, to take a clear and unequivocal stand on this issue. An Iraqi who kills civilians should be subject to the same ruthless condemnation applied to American soldiers who kill civilians, and the people with seats in the Iraqi parliament must understand that the problem is not Shi'ites, Sunnis, or Kurds.

The problem is evil scumbag murderers.

Respectfully submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat
