Confused Americans for Truth - Why Stop Israel from Blockading Lebanon?

by Ferdinand T Cat

Un Secretary Kofi Annan today called upon Israel to halt a blockade of southern Lebanon. Israel is unwilling to do so because, of course, Hezbollah has no intention of disarming.

Nonetheless, if you ask me, Annan should be thanking Israel rather than berating them. In Operational Paragraph 15 of the cease-fire resolution, it declares

all states shall take the necessary measures to prevent, by their nationals or from their territories or using their flag vessels or aircraft,

(a) the sale or supply to any entity or individual in Lebanon of arms and related materiel of all types, including weapons and ammunition, military vehicles and equipment, paramilitary equipment, and spare parts for the aforementioned, whether or not originating in their territories, and

(b) the provision to any entity or individual in Lebanon of any technical training or assistance related to the provision, manufacture, maintenance or use of the items listed in subparagraph (a) above,

Obviously, Israel thinks that one of the necessary measures is to sit on the Lebanese border and check everything going in. Since the UN's force on the ground at this point is a few hundred Frenchmen, Israel's decision to take up the slack makes perfect sense.

So, until the promised 15000 UN troops are in place (Operational Point 8) and while we're waiting for the government of Lebanon to secure its own borders (Operational Point 14) and establish control of Hezbollah territory (Operational Point 3), then the cause of a lasting peace in the Middle East (Operational Point 18) requires that Israel keep its forces in place.

You don't have to be a superior life form to figure that one out.

Respectfully submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat
