Notes from Ferdy - Terror Fears Get Scary

by Ferdinand T Cat

A group of passengers about to fly from Spain to London on Monarch airlines refused to let the plane take off until a pair of suspicious-looking passengers was removed.

While the passengers had every right to be concerned, what they did sets a dangerous precedent. The two men forced off the plane are guilty of nothing but speaking in a language that sounded vaguely Arabic, which is not a crime in even the most repressive states (e.g. Quebec).

We face this problem because on September 11 of 2001 the Al-Qaida guys opened a Pandora's Box: they proved that a small number of people can commit mass murder without the official backing of a government. Even if less than one percent of Muslims support terrorism, it's still enough to wipe out an entire city if they put their minds to it, and that changes everything.

You are all probably sick of the ACLU trying to thwart Bush Administration anti-terror measures, and of course, we're always only a few seconds from somebody quoting Ben Franklin on security and liberty. This, however, is the unintended fruit of their efforts: if the government can't protect the people, then the people are going to take the law into their own hands, and stories like this one will start becoming more frequent.

I don't know about you, but I find that pretty scary.

Respectfully submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat

There was a bit more than just Arabic, they were strangely dressed for a summer holliday.

Still, I'd have asked Security to check them out again - this is after they'd been through all of security.

Maybe one day we'll be segregated by airlines?

This is total overkill. But if the 'suspect' passengers had not been removed, and indeed were terrorists, and God forbid somthing happened, airline security would have been investigated to the 9th degree, then tightened further. Damned if you do, damned if you dont.

They were also talking about how the flight would be the last 30 minutes of their lives, because they are humorous rapscallions.

That info did not make much press, but that is what started the whole thing.
