Confused Americans for Truth - UN to Possibly Disarm Hezbollah if Cease-Fire Takes Hold
MIchelle Malkin describes the terms of the UN cease-fire agreement. ABC News, a less reliable source, claims Israel has accepted those terms. At this time, the exact language of the cease-fire resolution (SC #1701) is not available on the UN web site; however, the cease-fire is to be enforced by the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The UNIFIL will receive 15,000 additional troops, and their mandate is to oversee the withdrawal of Israeli forces and the establishment of the Lebanese army as the controlling military force in southern Lebanon. This has always been their mandate, and if 15,000 additional troops are insufficient to the task, I'm sure we can keep piling more on until we find a troop level that works.
I am perhaps being unfair. When the full text of resolution 1701 becomes available, it's possible there will be strong language requiring that Hezbollah be disarmed. I wonder, however, if the UNIFIL will be allowed to conduct house-to-house searches to find rocket launchers, and if they intend to station troops around Lebanon for the purpose of preventing more rockets from coming in.
We all want peace, of course, but this may be nothing of the sort. If Hezbollah decides to attack Israel again, its human shields will not be Lebanese civilians but an armed military force with international backing. Should that force fail to take corrective action, Israel is truly cooked.
I would rather see Hezbollah smashed into nonexistence, but Israel and Lebanon may be unable to pay the required cost for that. The UN solution will work only if the UN is serious about taking away Hezbollah's weapons. You and I may think that's unlikely, but it's the only hope for a happy outcome to all this. As such, our goal in the coming weeks should be to ask that the hope become a reality.
I've put my superior brain to the task, and I think the following recruiting poster will help.

Respectfully submitted,

Although it would seem as if Olmert had decided to give the [belated] go-ahead to the IDF to raid Lebanon and go as far as the Litani river, his acceptance of the "cease-fire" draft in the UN security council is still more or less an act of surrender... [Read More]
