Laura Ingraham - Why I Hate Articles About Why They Hate Us
On Wednesday, Laura Ingraham devoted a segment to an L. A. Times opinion piece called Why They Hate Us. It's been bothering me ever since.
Laura, of course, criticized the author's conclusions very heavily. She could do this because why-they-hate-us articles are a dime a dozen, and most of them are pretty similar.
Anyway, after two whole days of applying my superior brain to this problem (and that's a lot of brainpower considering I only sleep 20 hours a day), it suddenly occurred to me what had me so bothered about it. See, the author listed a bunch of bad things America had done, and my first instinct was to refute them. That's because an important aspect of the problem was completely missing from the article in question. The stupid thing does not have one solid fact about how people in other countries see us. In other words, it's not an article about why people hate America, it's an article about why journalists hate America.
This is a serious problem, folks. Imagine that the Democrats get control of the government again and decide to implement a fair foreign policy based on what they've read in the newspapers. We may get endless editorials about how wonderful America is, but the people in Iraq will be wondering why we turned the country over to the terrorists. The schools will close, the electric plants will be blown up, and the mass graves will have little markers that say America lost its spine and we lost our freedom.
I think that would justify a whole lot of Anti-Americanism.
So it's time to face facts: while it's true that Bush's War on Terror has made us less safe from journalists, it's not journalists who try to blow up airplanes. What we really need is a policy that does something about people who think the right to kill Israelis is more important than the rule of law. Saddam Hussein is one of them, as is the current President of Iran, the leaders of Hezbollah, and a whole lot of other people who hate America.
To the extent Bush's War on Terror is failing, it's in the extent that too many of these loonies are getting away with murder, not that we've been over-zealous.
Most of the articles about why they hate us seem to forget all about that aspect of the problem.
Respectfully submitted,
Ferdinand T. Cat

I agree. That was my column this week (posted at my web site). In her defense, the headline was a tad misleading and she did have some good points. But really, if they hate us and want to kill us, then just kill them and then psychoanalyze them
