Carnivals - The Death of the Carnival Submit Form

by Bruce the Human Pet

I have to take down the Carnival Submit Form. The http://www.blogcarnival.com web site is far more powerful than anything I could do in my spare time, so there's not the need that we used to have. More seriously, spam abuse from our form is so large that I am risking permanent damage to the credibility of my web server.

The problem is that it uses a standard script which is vulnerable to exploitation by spammers. It would take days of research and testing to fix the problem, because I have to come up with a complete replacement for the aforementioned standard script.

So, perhaps when I get a few weeks of vacation in the future I can come up with something better and safer. In the meantime, it has to come down.

Thank you VERY VERY MUCH for having done it for so long! You helped a lot of folks mightily with your efforts.

I'll change your link on my blog to a straight-ahead one not mentioning the submit form, of course.

The Carnival of the Cats would not have been the success it was without your form to help people send submissions in.

Thank you for the time you made it available to the Blogosphere.

Wow. Thanks for all the effort you put in, and for being there before the evil leeches came along and started "Blog Carnival."

Your submission e-mails are far superior to theirs.

Damn.

Do you have any idea how much you'll be missed? At least for CotC we have the Gongol form, which was always the preferred one, focusing as it did on one carnival alone. Your entries were next best.

Blog Carnival sucks. Their entry e-mails aren't as good. They are presumptuous and obnoxious. They have been good only for the minor carnivals that never got linked by the Blog Carnival proprieter's high traffic cousin even in the heyday. Nevermind after the Blog Carnival encouraged explosion. Do we really need to reach the level of Carnival of Zit Popping, Carnival of Cellular Automata, Carnival of Raw Mollusc Cookery, etc.? Not IMHO.

I really really really appreciate what you've done for us all this time, and can't tell you how much I hate to see you go. Spammers must die horribly, like so many pre-Rachel Carson mosquitos.

Argh.

Sorry to hear that, Ferdy. Thanks for you keeping it up as long as you have. Best wishes from Best of Me Symphony.

Thank you for your great service to others. Your efforts were noticed and appreciated by many. Be well Bruce and Ferdy!

I'm so sorry. You've done so much for all of us.
I just checked in to report that the 10th KCC is up, and I wasn't expecting the bad news. I really prefer your format.

I hate spammers with the fiery passion of a 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000...

OK, you get the idea.

Anyway, mucho thanks to human pet Bruce, for providing a central location for me to make submissions to the carnivals that I made submissions to for so long.

Thanks very much for keeping the form up as long as you have. It was very convenient!

Arrrrrgggghhh!

I just went to submit for the Carnival of the Cats, and discovered that your submission form was gone. Having hosted the CotCats several times, I found your form to be far superior to the blog carnival form. Theirs is no better than a direct email from a contributor. I know that it's not terribly difficult to generate the html format that your form did automatically, and it's such a help to carnival hosts.

Thanks for providing the service for as long as you did. I hope you'll be able to put it back up soon.

Major bummer. Your form was *so* much better than BlogCarnival, both as a submitter and as a host. Thanks for doing it. I hope you can bring it back soon.

Big fat bummer on the half shell. I totally understand, and appreciate that it's a major pain dealing with spam. You've been a gem dealing with this headache for so long. But I have no confidence in the BlogCarnival. I much preferred your form. It will be greatly missed!!!!

We shall meet, but we shall miss you.

Your form and your hard work are greatly appreciated. Please, let us know when all your spam problems have had their hash settled!
