Blogging Hell - The eblogzone Conspiracy

by Ferdinand T Cat

Someone is trying to look as if they're as smart as basil of basil's blog, and I won't tolerate it.

The culprit is an outfit called eblogzone.com. There are at least five blogs at that location, separated by category-- movies, finance, animation, cars, and sports. Each uses a bare-bones Wordpress template wrapped around a feed. Aside from soaking every spare inch of screen with Google AdSense ads, very little work was put into formatting the blogs: the blogrolls still list the Wordpress developers, and the text on the About pages states that the About page is a really good place to put some information about yourself.

The eblogzone pages were apparently created two weeks ago. The domain itself is listed by a registry service in order to protect the identity of the real owners. There's almost a good idea here: aggregate feeds from blogs on a particular topic. Unfortunately, most of the topics are only picking up a single blog's feed. Thus, if you want to learn about sports, all you're going to see is basil's last few posts plus excerpts from the half dozen or so prior to that. You get less than basil himself delivers but with more advertising.

It is exactly that level of cluelessness that gives eblogzine the aura of another spammer trick. Perhaps it really is a legitimate effort to provide useful feeds, but the sort of person who classifies basil as a sports blogger is the same sort who thinks I'll be sucked in by a hot stock pick because they found a way to fool my spam filter.

So be careful out there and do not be fooled by cheap imitations. There is only one basil, and that's the way it should be.

Respectfully submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat

They actually made up a blog with Don Surber's name in it. Sean Gleeson discovered that one and pointed me to it: http://donsurber.eblogzone.com/Blogz/

It still had the WordPress Installation page showing! So I clicked it, and set myself up as the administrator. And made it a pretty pink.

I haven't told Don yet. Heh.

Hi Bruce, this is the guy behind Eblogzone.

I sure hadn't anticipated this kind of a response to the Eblogzone thing. EBZ is nothing but a script am working on that aggregates feeds.

And just for the same, I have provided a link to the source after every single post and you can verify the same.

I will remove Basil's feed tonite and I guess it must've come under the sports category owing to the sports tag it must've had on sites like technorati or so!

Anyways have a good day! Nice blog btw!

Hey Basil Just saw your comment!

No it wasn't a setup page, actually it was an auto subdomain parser script so whatever subdomain you must've used it would have showed you the wordpress installation page! I have fixed it now!

TBH, I don't even know who Don Surber is (No disrespect to the man)

Cheers!

Well, then, it was just your bad luck that we stumbled onto the site before it was ready. I'm truly sorry if we caused you unnecessary consternation.

Don Surber is a professional journalist who has dozens of identities and scares the crap out of anybody with sense, but if you send me $500 in non-sequential Sargento's Cheese discount coupons, I can protect you.
