Confused Americans for Truth - Toward a More Rational Style of Outrage Hunting
Okay, it's been a four days now and the controversy surrounding the Pope's speech at the University of Regensburg is still going strong.
It's worth noting that the pope's speech was long, wide-ranging, scholarly, and about as exciting as a two-week-old box of donuts. The amazing thing here is not that the pope said something to offend Muslims around the world. No, it's that there's somebody sitting around somewhere reading everything the pope says to try and find something offensive.
This is not at all how cats work. We wait for the prey to come to us. Humans, however, like to go out and find the food, and so instead of going about your business and snapping to attention when you're offended, you have people actively hunting for outrages.
The difficulty here is that the outrage hunters working for the Palestinians, Muslim radicals in India, and the other Islamists around the world tend to create situations where people get pissed off and blow things up. This is silly. Blowing things up and calling people names does not do a damn thing to improve life in the Gaza strip or reduce sectarian violence in Iraq. What improves life is cash, which can be used to purchase things like cat ramps and mozzarella cheese. Instead of burning the Pope in effigy, these youths should talk about how painful it is to hear bad things about your religion when you're poor, and how a large bag of hundred-euro notes with random serial numbers would make it easier to understand the need for peaceful dialog rather than violence as a way to implement social change. This is very similar to the arrangement Jimmy Carter worked out with North Korea in the Nineties. Not only was this effort instrumental in getting Carter the Nobel Peace Prize, but North Korea was extremely happy with the results.
So, if you're an angry Muslim, consider that a change of tactics could seriously improve your situation and your station in the world. Quite frankly, this whole idea of burning things and blowing them up to prove you're nonviolent was funny in a twisted way when you first tried it, but it's getting old real fast.
Respectfully submitted,
Ferdinand T. Cat

I don't understand why this doesn't wake people up to the hate these people have and their leaders instill in them. You're right, this should have opened up eyes on both side. God help us all.

I don't know how safe it is for a sagerat to leave a comment on a cat bloggers blog, but I just have to say that I totally agree with you on this one! While people are running around screaming about hate speech, I have to wonder, how many muslims were actually in the audience and just why were they there? You can't expect that the Pope is going to have anything to say that would be uplifting to a muslim. If people can't say how they feel negatively about something, I wonder what kinds of mental problems will crop up from it and how that will wind up causing the tax payers to pay for it all.
