Confused Americans for Truth - British Scientist Worries About the Web
Sir Tim Berners-Lee, who helped turn the Internet into the World Wide Web, is now concerned that his brainchild will become a tool to spread misinformation.
It is a very human trait to be concerned about how something new and uncontrolled will turn out, That trait is what compels you to keep your children in the nest for 18 years rather than kicking them out into the cold as soon as they're able to kill something.
Anyway, Dr. Berners-Lee is not the only one working on this problem. Former CBS News producer Mary Mapes warned us last December about a shadowy network of conservatives using the Internet to destroy political enemies. At the time, Democrats were already aware of this problem, and were working hard to insure that the Federal government could regulate publication of political speech on the Internet.
Now I don't know what Dr. Berners-Lee is thinking, but there is a reason the Democrats are on the job: their common criticism of the Internet is that the average person doesn't have the intellectual resources to distinguish truth from distortion. And as you all know, there is one ONE WAY to fix that.
