Ferdy at the Movies - Maybe He Should Have Stuck with Whispering

It is with a heavy heart that I report the existence of a Studio Ghibli film that stinks. I am speaking of The Cat Returns, and I cannot tell you how much I regret seeing this film.

The title of The Cat Returns reflects that it is a sequel to Whisper of the Heart. If you're going to see both movies, seeing Whisper first will help. Maybe that was my mistake.

The mistake the writers made, however, is less forgivable: they organized cats into a monarchy. PUH-LEEZE, people. It's bad enough you have all these fantasy stories about The Rightful King of This and The Charming Prince of That without imposing your ridiculous ideas about government on us!

The concept of a rightful king was officially made obsolete on July 4 of 1776. It is permissible to allow this discredited meme to infuse your literature, but only so long as there is a prominent proponent of liberty and individual rights standing firm in your midst. That proponent is the superior cat (felis silvestris catus), and his example is all that stands between you and people who think Iraq was better off with Saddam Hussein!

There are other problems with the movie. The Ghibli Girl at the center of it lacks the delicate combination of grit and vulnerability that made Chihiro and Kiki so compelling, and there's not the undercurrent of ordinary human love hiding in the background. Plus, far too much time is spent with stupid impostor cats who work for a FREAKING KING! I mean, CATS WITH A KING!!! It's so mind-bogglingly immoral I can't bear to think of it.

Anyway, if you're looking for a good animated movie about cats, pick up Chuck Jones's Gay Purr-ee. But stay away from anything that contains the ABOMINABLE CONCEPT OF A KING OF THE CATS!

Such a movie is evidence that the Mass Media Podpeople Hivemind _does_ exist, and it sees everything in terms of its own hiveminded ethos.
